Gunners closing in on Kalou capture

Arsene Wenger is closing in on Chelsea's Salomon Kalou, according to reports.

Arsenal are said to have offered £6m for the midfielder but the Blues are holding out for a figure closer to £8m.

Wenger has a £30m transfer kitty to spend after the high profile departures of Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, who both went to Manchester City.

Arsenal's only signing so far this summer remains Thomas Vermaelen, who they bought from Ajax for £10m.

Kalou is set to be offered the chance to double his weekly wage at the Emirates, with a five-year deal worth £60,000 a week being rumoured.

Kalou was quoted in Ferbuary as saying he would like to play under Wenger. He said: "He is a very great coach and I know that every single player in the world dreams of playing for him.

"I have a lot of respect for him, he is one of the best coaches in the world. Arsenal are achieving huge things and watching them play is beautiful."

Chelsea may be willing to let Kalou leave if they can tie up a deal for Andrea Pirlo. The AC Milan skipper has been the subject of a recent £14m bid from the Stamford Bridge club.

Meanwhile, Marouane Chamakh has reportedly flown to London in an attempt to push though his move to Arsenal from Bordeaux.

The 25-year-old said on Monday he was "disgusted" by the French club's approach to the deal.

Manchester City in talks with Adebayor

Manchester City are reportedly in talks with Arsenal over the signing of Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The striker has been linked with a move away from the Emirates all summer with AC Milan and Chelsea at the head of the queue; however, now that City have ended their interest in Samuel Eto'o, it appears the tall Gunners forward is on their list.

Negotiations are said to be at a 'significant level' and a fee of around £20m is believed to be enough to tempt the club into a sale.

Indeed, Sky Sports reports that talks have begun, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger previously stating that he would not have a problem selling the player to a Premier League rival.

Last month Wenger said of Adebayor's chances of staying at the Emirates Stadium: "If he doesn't want to stay, he will leave. But I think that he will be still at Arsenal this season."

Adebayor has scored 62 goals in 142 appearances for the Gunners following his arrival from AS Monaco in January 2006 and reports have suggested the club could turn to Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh as his replacement.

Ramsey signs new "long-term" Arsenal deal

Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey has agreed a new long-term contract with Arsenal.

The 18-year-old arrived at Emirates Stadium from Cardiff last summer in what was understood to be a £5million deal.

Ramsey made 22 first team appearances for the Gunners, which started with the Champions League qualifier against Steve McClaren's FC Twente.

The former Cardiff youngster netted his first, and so far only, senior goal in the 5-2 European victory at Fenerbahce during October.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is more than happy with Ramsey's progress so far.

"Aaron made a very good contribution in his first season and he showed that he is a very intelligent player with great quality," said Wenger.

"He is still only 18 and we are really looking forward to seeing him develop with us in the forthcoming years."

Vermaelen set for Arsenal medical on Friday?

Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen claims he will undergo a medical at Arsenal on Friday.

The Belgium international has spoken regularly over the past few weeks of his desire to leave Amsterdam and join the north London side.

And while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has yet to comment on the speculation, the player's agent recently suggested a four-year deal has been offered to his client.

Vermaelen told Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen: "On Friday I will fly to London to have my medical.

"After that I hope to put pen to paper. Boy I feel so proud, Arsenal is a fantastic club and one that, as a child, I enjoyed watching play.

"Arsene Wenger stands for nice, attacking football and dares to work with young talents. That appeals to me enormously.

"Not that that tipped the scales though. When a club like Arsenal stands at your door, then you just go. When I get to the Emirates Stadium on Friday I will be hugely impressed.

"A lot will change in my life. Next season I will come up against the best strikers in the world. I am not scared by that, I will give all my body can give. This is one of the most beautiful days of my life."

Vermaelen joined Ajax in 2004 and has made over 100 appearances for the club.

Frustrated Eboue "could leave Arsenal"

Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue could be on his way out of the Emirates after revealing he is unhappy at the Premier League club.

The Ivory Coast international, who can also play on the right wing, has grown frustrated by his failure to hold down a regular starting spot.

And, despite only having signed a new deal last summer, the 26-year-old admits he could be set to leave England.

"It would be hard," Eboue told France Football. "But I think it would be harder to experience another season like this one, too far off the pitch...

"In any case, if I leave Arsenal, it would be for another league because it is out of the question that I develop elsewhere in England."

Eboue moved to Arsenal from Beveren in January 2005 and became a first-team regular in the second half of the following season.

However, inconsistent form saw him overtaken by Bacary Sagna and Theo Walcott in the pecking order.

He was booed by the Gunners fans back in December after coming off the bench against Wigan and was himself substituted.

Champion's League: O'Shea the unlikely hero

Semi Final Leg 1 Old Trafford
Manchester United 1 - 0 Arsenal

Unlikely hero John O'Shea gave Manchester United a priceless 1-0 lead to take into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final with Arsenal.
The defender's nerveless 17th-minute effort was the least Sir Alex Ferguson's side deserved for a near faultless display, in which Manuel Almunia made a quartet of stunning saves and Cristiano Ronaldo rattled the Gunners' crossbar.

In addition, Ryan Giggs had a goal controversially disallowed for offside on his 800th appearance, meaning Arsenal headed home glad to still have a chance of reaching Rome on May 27.

However, having indicated on Tuesday a single-goal victory and a clean sheet would represent a perfect result, Ferguson got exactly what he wanted and his side must be favourites to get through.

A game of pure football had been expected after the sterile affair in Catalonia on Tuesday night. The problem for Arsenal was only United produced it.

The first half-hour was as one-sided as a game at this level is possible to be.

With screening midfielders Alexandre Song and Abou Diaby failing completely to quell the tide of onrushing home players, Wenger's team were almost submerged before they had managed so much as a shot.

United would have been in front with only a minute on the clock had Almunia not managed to claw away a looping Wayne Rooney header that seemed destined to drop in.

It proved to be the sign of things to come for Arsenal, who were pulled apart at regular intervals, with Almunia resembling King Canute trying to hold back the tide.

The Spaniard pulled off two splendid stops in the space of a minute to deny Ronaldo.

His first was the pick, parrying a firm header from point-blank range after Carlos Tevez had crossed. A curling shot from the boot of the Ballon D'Or winner followed shortly afterwards which Almunia was also equal to.

It would be too simplistic to say Tevez was the catalyst for such relentless attacking.

However, it is undeniable the Argentinian triggered Saturday's amazing comeback against Tottenham and, surprisingly selected ahead of record signing Dimitar Berbatov, Tevez kept going exactly the same way.

It was a close-range effort from Tevez, saved by Almunia, that proved to be the prelude to United's opener.

Anderson's corner fell kindly for Michael Carrick at the far post, with the England star electing for a firmly driven cross into the six-yard box.

Against his former club, Mikael Silvestre was eager to make a positive impression. That did not include deflecting the ball to O'Shea.

Leaning back, the Irishman crashed his shot into the roof of Almunia's net.

O'Shea has form for that kind of thing. A couple of years ago, he scored a last-minute winner at Anfield and then smacked one in at Everton in what turned out to be a title-winning victory.

If Arsenal thought the second half at least gave them an opportunity to enjoy a more even share of possession and chances, they were mistaken.

A rocket shot from Ronaldo cannoned away for a corner off Silvestre, the same player also sliding in to clear a low Evra cross bound for Tevez.

Anderson blazed over from the edge of the area, which was perhaps no surprise given he has not scored for United in almost two years since arriving from FC Porto. Under the circumstances, it was probably just as well an offside flag had earlier been incorrectly raised against the Brazilian as he threatened to charge clear after collecting an O'Shea pass.

Having given so much, Tevez was not amused to be replaced by Berbatov midway through the second-half.

Not that a capacity crowd had much time to consider his reaction after a loud rendition of 'Argentina' that followed 'sign him up', a cry seemingly destined to go unheeded.

Attention was diverted by the thunderous 25-yard effort from Ronaldo that smacked into the crossbar as United strained every sinew in their search for a second.

In response, Cesc Fabregas was off target with a couple of half-chances, Emmanuel Adebayor's volley flew over and substitute Nicolas Bendtner might well have equalised with a header from the free-kick that caused the collision which forced Rio Ferdinand off with what seemed like a rib injury.

The sight of Ferdinand trying to get back on even though Jonny Evans had already replaced him, emphasised how much this means to United.

Arsenal will need to exceed that determination if they are to overhaul the deficit next week.

EPL: Fabregas brace denies brave Boro

Arsenal 2 - 0 Middlesbrough

Captain Cesc Fabregas scored both goals as Arsenal warmed up for their Champions League semi-final against Manchester United with a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are now all but safe in fourth place following a run of 20 league matches without defeat.
Andrey Arshavin, who smashed in four goals at Liverpool in midweek, was again inspirational this afternoon, but will not be eligible for the European clash against holders United.
With leading scorer Robin van Persie still sidelined by a groin problem, the double salvo by Fabregas - subject to a misconduct charge by the Football Association in the fall-out from the FA Cup tie against Hull - and the return to fitness of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia could not have come at a better time.
With such a vital Champions League tie only some 72 hours away, manager Arsene Wenger would have been forgiven if he had rested a couple of his key men today in front of the watchful eyes of Sir Alex Ferguson in the Emirates crowd.
However, Arsenal had named a strong starting XI and remained positive from the outset, with Theo Walcott - in his 100th appearance for the club - looking to get clear down the right and Arshavin deployed in a roaming role from the left.
The first opening came after eight minutes.
Walcott was sent clear by Fabregas, but Robert Huth, the former Chelsea defender, made a fine recovery tackle.
Arsenal continued to press Boro on the edge of the area, with full-back Kieran Gibbs almost getting on the end of Fabregas' pass at the near post.
Arshavin snatched possession some 18 yards out, but could not make enough space for a clean shot, and would perhaps have been better to play Fabregas in on the overlap down the left.
To their credit Boro continued to chase down the home side albeit without making too much impression in the opposition half.
The Gunners went ahead on 26 minutes. Nicklas Bendtner flicked the ball to Fabregas in the centre-circle, and the Arsenal captain immediately released Arshavin down the left. The Russian raced into the area before laying the ball back across into the path of the on-rushing Fabregas, who drilled his shot past Brad Jones, low in the far corner.
Arsenal looked for a second, and Walcott screwed a shot across the face of goal when a square pass to Bendtner in the centre looked the better option.
Almunia, fit again following an ankle problem, was called into action on 43 minutes when he saved Stewart Downing's 20-yard snap-shot at full strength, down to the left.
Arsenal made a change at the start of the second half when Mikael Silvestre, the ex-Manchester United defender, was replaced by Johan Djourou, fit again following a knee problem.
Boro almost snatched an equaliser when former Gunner Jeremie Aliadiere took a through ball on his chest and raced into the area, but Almunia was quick off his line to make a crucial block.
At the other end, Fabregas and Emmanuel Eboue combined to tee-up Walcott six yards out, with Jones producing a quick reaction save.
In a warning for the hosts, Boro striker Marlon King fired an angled volley from Tony McMahon's cross goalwards which Almunia held, but on 67 minutes, the Gunners cut the visitors' defence open again.
Arshavin stepped inside to find a square pass to Eboue, who slid the ball through into the path of Fabregas.
Jones rushed out to close down the Arsenal captain, but was promptly rounded before Fabregas rolled the ball into the net.
With the points safe and one eye on next week's clash with United, Arsenal made a double change with 22 minutes left when Abou Diaby and Emmanuel Adebayor came on, replacing Fabregas and Walcott.
The Gunners played out the closing stages to record a first win over Boro since January 2006 to go into Wednesday's clash at Old Trafford full of confidence.

EPL: Arshavin hits four

Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal

Four goals from Andrey Arshavin put a huge dent in Liverpool's Barclays Premier League title hopes as Arsenal drew 4-4 at Anfield.
The hosts went ahead of Manchester United on goal difference having come from behind three times, starting with Arshavin's first in the 36th minute.

Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun scored soon after the interval but three further goals from the Russian Gunner piled the pressure back on Rafael Benitez's side and even a second from Torres and an injury-time equaliser from Benayoun were not enough to force victory.

The result hands a huge advantage to United, who have two matches in hand with the first tomorrow at home to Portsmouth.

Liverpool were architects of their own downfall as the first three Arsenal goals came from mistakes.

It was almost a carbon copy of their Champions League exit against Chelsea a week ago when a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge saw them miss out on the semi-finals.

It was also not the first time Arsenal had done serious damage to a Liverpool title challenge, it being 20 years since Michael Thomas scored on this ground with the last kick of the season to deny the Reds the championship.

Torres and Albert Riera should have done better with their early efforts to test the fragile confidence of Lucasz Fabianski but both fired straight at the goalkeeper.

Javier Mascherano fired wide after 15 minutes as Arsenal were content to soak up what Liverpool had to offer and swiftly counter-attack when the chance arose.

Those occasions were few and far between and Fabianski, who had looked shaky on a couple of occasions, had to be at his best to tip over Torres' shot from the right angle of the penalty area.

Referee Howard Webb waved away Liverpool appeals in the 26th minute when Mikael Silvestre appeared to catch Dirk Kuyt on the edge of the area.

Arsenal's first chance came when they broke quickly from a Liverpool corner and Cesc Fabregas volleyed wide after Daniel Agger, making his 50th league appearance, had got in Jose Reina's way as he tried to punch clear.

A smart turn by Torres on Kolo Toure saw the Spain striker fire in a 25-yard shot which Fabianski could only parry but Silvestre cleared the danger.

Samir Nasri then had to clear off the line at the far post after Agger flicked on Xabi Alonso's right-wing corner before the Gunners hit their hosts with a sucker punch in the 36th minute.

Mascherano lost the ball on the edge of the penalty area and Fabregas exchanged passes with Nasri before crossing for Arshavin to fire home off the underside of the crossbar.

Benayoun immediately brought a diving save from Fabianski and then headed over as Liverpool piled on the pressure leading up to the interval without reward.

Liverpool realistically had 45 minutes to keep their season alive and that realisation brought the equaliser within four minutes of the restart.

Alvaro Arbeloa's cross was poorly dealt with by Bacary Sagna and Kuyt collected the ball, got to the byline and crossed for Torres to head low into the left corner of Fabianski's goal.

Seven minutes later they were ahead. Fabianski and Kieren Gibbs both messed up their clearances and Kuyt crossed to the far post where Benayoun headed in.

The goalkeeper claimed to have clawed the ball out but it was clearly over the line.

In the 65th minute Arsene Wenger brought on Theo Walcott for Denilson to try to get back in the game but it was another mistake which brought their equaliser.

Arbeloa could not control Jamie Carragher's downward defensive header and Arshavin nipped in to fire past Reina's outstretched left hand.

Incredibly for a team which had conceded just eight goals in 16 home league matches a third error handed Arsenal the lead again.

Fabio Aurelio played a left-wing cross straight to Arshavin 10 yards out and he drilled a shot under Reina for his hat-trick in the 70th minute.

Amazingly Liverpool were level again two minutes later when Torres controlled Riera's cross, turned Silvestre and fired past Fabianski.

Torres had a header cleared off the line by Gibbs from Alonso's corner with nine minutes to go and Carragher fired over from Aurelio's cross as Liverpool desperately pushed for the winner.

And that cost them as Walcott broke from a corner and played in Arshavin to score his fourth in injury time.

Benayoun bundled home an equaliser even later on but it was too late to force a victory.

Toure: Young Gunners will learn from loss

ARSENAL 1-2 CHELSEA
FA Cup Semi Final

Kolo Toure believes Arsenal's youngsters can only get stronger from the experiences of their Wembley FA Cup semi-final heartbreak against Chelsea.

The Gunners - forced to field a makeshift defence - came off second best against a determined Blues side, driven on by England midfielder Frank Lampard who turned in a man-of-the-match display.

It had, though, been a positive start from Arsene Wenger's side, who took the lead through Theo Walcott's strike on 18 minutes.

However, that was as good as it got for Arsenal, with Florent Malouda equalising before half-time and then, just six minutes from time, Didier Drogba sealing a return to Wembley for Chelsea on May 30 as he capitalised on a rush of blood from Poland keeper Lukasz Fabianski, who endured a 24th birthday to forget.

Toure, however, believes such trials can serve to galvanise players for the challenges ahead.

"You can only learn from these types of games, because they are so intense," said the 28-year-old centre-back.

"When you make some mistakes, they can cost you, which is what happened against Chelsea.

"We will just have to try not to do that again."

Toure is the last remaining regular from Wenger's Invincibles side which went undefeated for the entire 2003/2004 campaign.

The Ivory Coast defender, though, feels the latest generation of promising talent can go on to fulfil their undoubted potential.

"This can be just the start for this team, because there are some really good players coming through," said Toure.

"The season started really badly, but we have come back very well.

"We hope to keep going now and improve the way we are playing."

Arsenal still have plenty to focus on during the closing weeks of the campaign.

Wenger takes his men to Anfield on Tuesday looking to extend their unbeaten Premier League run from 18 matches with a victory which would both dent Liverpool's title hopes and cement Arsenal's place in the top four.

Toure believes having such an important match so quickly in what is a hectic month ahead will help quickly consign their Wembley defeat to history.

"The good thing is that we only have a couple of days to get this loss off our back," he said.

"We will head to Liverpool on Tuesday and look to get the three points.

"Our target is now the league and Europe. We will stay focused for that.

"We just have to put all this to the back now and focus on the next game."

Arsenal will hope full-back Bacary Sagna can have shaken off the virus which ruled him out of the last two matches to be fit to travel to Liverpool.

However, leading scorer Robin van Persie, replaced in the second half at Wembley, will be assessed after appearing to aggravate his groin problem.

Champion's League: Excellent Arsenal set up all-English semi

Arsenal 3 - 0 Villarreal

2ND LEG: 4 - 1 (Agg)

Arsenal have been portrayed as a club in crisis this season but they are now in the Champions League semi-final after sweeping past Villarreal 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie were on the scoresheet as Arsene Wenger's youngsters defied their injury worries in defence to wrap up the tie 4-1 on aggregate within an hour.

The Spaniards had Sebastian Eguren dismissed, and the hosts were then able to conserve energy for their FA Cup clash against Chelsea at the weekend.

If they win at Wembley there will be genuine hope of getting something out a season where many predicted them to slip out of the traditional top four in England.

Wenger himself admits he has been amazed by how his young players have gone 18 Barclays Premier League games without defeat - and this performance will have impressed him too.

But nothing has been easy at Arsenal this season. Earlier in the campaign William Gallas was stripped of the captaincy, now Wenger is desperately short on numbers in at the back.

Ahead of this clash, Bacary Sagna was taken ill, meaning an entire back four was missing as Arsenal protected their slender away-goals advantage.

Kolo Toure held together a defence that contained Emmanuel Eboue at right-back, Kieran Gibbs at left-back and inexperienced Lucasz Fabianski in goal.

Villarreal had problems of their own, with Marcos Senna, the cornerstone of their midfield, out injured.

They did have Robert Pires stationed on the left flank, meaning it was Arsenal's past versus the club's future, as Walcott was raiding down the right.

It was a fascinating clash, with Walcott almost putting the ball out of play early on when Pires picked up a knock, only to carry on with the ball to set up an attack.

The 20-year-old showed his ruthless side again when he netted the opener in the 10th minute.

Eboue slipped the ball forward from the right, Cesc Fabregas' flick allowed Walcott to run through on goal, with the England winger chipping home high over goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

It was reward for Arsenal's bright start after Van Persie went close with a header that cleared the crossbar and a long-range effort that Lopez gathered at the second attempt.

The hosts were inches from adding a second goal after Van Persie's powerful free-kick was saved by Lopez. Adebayor's follow-up header got deflected on target but Gonzalo Rodriguez hacked off the line.

All eyes were on the assistant referee but it would have been the tightest of calls if he had flagged for a goal.

The equation for Villarreal shifted only slightly - they still needed a goal.

Diego Godin had given Wenger's side an early scare when he got on the end of Giuseppe Rossi's free-kick and forced Fabianski into a save with his scissor-kick.

The visitors then caused some nervous moments in Arsenal's defence before the break, with Rossi getting sight of goal at the near post before the hosts scrambled clear.

Pires also had a shot blocked from the edge of the area, while Godin headed over from a corner in first-half stoppage-time.

Manuel Pellegrini's men sensed that it was their time to apply pressure on Arsenal's makeshift defence. It meant all hands on deck for Wenger's makeshift back line.

Arsenal's best option was to counter attack. Van Persie was making runs from deep to cause Villarreal problems, with Godin picking up a booking for stopping one run.

No opponent got close enough to Van Persie on the hour mark and he sent through Adebayor, who took one touch before finishing past Lopez with the outside of his boot.

The third came from Van Persie's penalty and also saw Eguran dismissed.

Godin took Walcott's legs away in the penalty area but escaped a second booking for the offence. Eguran, who got a yellow card in the first half, got another caution for dissent and then disgracefully put his hands on the referee while protesting more. Van Persie kept his nerve and fired in the spot-kick.

Wenger's goalscorers were then given a breather to rest for the battles ahead.

Champion's League: Adebayor stunner secures draw

Villarreal 1 - 1 Arsenal

Emmanuel Adebayor netted a crucial away goal as Arsenal came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at El Madrigal.
The Togo striker made it three in two games, and five in this European campaign, with a stunning scissor-kick after 66 minutes to cancel out an equally impressive opener from home captain Marcos Senna.

Arsene Wenger's side lost both goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and centre-back William Gallas to injury during the first half, but rallied to secure what could prove to be a decisive result to defend at Emirates Stadium next Wednesday night.

The last time Arsenal played at the intimidating Spanish ground was three seasons ago when a dramatic late penalty save from Jens Lehmann guided them through to the European Cup final.

While that journey ultimately ended in defeat to Barcelona, there is growing belief Rome in 2009 could just prove the coming of age for Wenger's young Gunners.

Villarreal have never lost at home in the Champions League and kept holders Manchester United to a goalless draw earlier this season.

So it was no surprise the hosts settled quickly.

There was a goal-mouth scramble following a corner when Gael Clichy cleared off the line and Almunia smothered the loose ball as defender Gonzalo Rodriguez looked to capitalise.

Villarreal then took the lead in stunning fashion after 10 minutes.

The ball was worked down the right before being passed inside to Senna. The skipper took aim and drilled a wonderful 25-yard strike past Almunia into the top corner, setting El Madrigal alight.

Arsenal looked to respond immediately and forced a couple of corners.

A smart turn and run by Theo Walcott fed Cesc Fabregas, who slipped Samir Nasri, replacing the cup-tied Andrey Arshavin, in on the left side of the area.

The Frenchman's angled drive was pushed around the post by Diego Lopez.

Arsenal were forced into a change after 27 minutes when Almunia, who sustained an ankle injury in the early goal-line scramble, was replaced by Lukasz Fabianski.

The young Pole was immediately called into action, first saving low to his left from Senna and then producing a good reaction block at the near post to deny Joan Capdevila.

The visitors had some good spells of neat passing but were unable to make the best of promising positions.

After 38 minutes, Villarreal were awarded a free-kick when Alex Song tripped Giuseppe Rossi, once a Manchester United player, just outside the penalty area, the Arsenal midfielder booked.

Gallas was then clattered by the falling striker and had to be carried off on a stretcher for treatment, eventually being replaced by Johan Djourou.

Ariel Ibagaza struck the free-kick off the bottom of the wall.

Cani then shot wide as the Spaniards pressed for a second.

In stoppage time, Arsenal were awarded a free-kick in a central position after Adebayor went down in between two defenders.

Fabregas took his shot early, rolling the ball into the net, but the quick effort was ruled out by Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and the Arsenal captain was shown a yellow card.

Kolo Toure's strike was then blocked by the wall.

As the hour mark approached, it was continuing to be a night of frustration for the Barclays Premier League side, who had been on a decent run of form heading into the game.

Walcott floated a ball in from the right, which Adebayor glanced wide.

Then, out of nothing, the big striker struck a superb equaliser to stun the home crowd in the 66th minute.

There seemed little danger when Fabregas, who set up both Adebayor's goals against Manchester City on Saturday, lofted a high ball into the Villarreal penalty area.

Even though surrounded by three markers and with his back to goal, Adebayor collected the ball on his chest before dispatching a brilliant scissor-kick into the far corner.

Nasri drilled wide as Arsenal went looking for a second.

Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires was introduced, to a warm reception from the travelling fans, for the final 21 minutes, replacing Joseba Llorente.

Walcott blazed over after being played in on the right of the penalty area by Fabregas, before he was replaced by Emmanuel Eboue.

There was still some defending to do for the Gunners as Rossi looked to get on the end of a near-post cross before Senna almost netted another 25-yard effort.

But Arsenal remained strong under intense late pressure to give themselves every chance in the second leg.

EPL: Arshavin shines

Arsenal 4 - 0 Blackburn Rovers

Andrey Arshavin opened his Arsenal account as an attacking masterclass saw the Gunners to a handsome 4-0 victory over Blackburn in their Premier League clash at the Emirates.
• Wenger still gunning for glory

Theo Walcott, restored to the starting XI following a cameo against Roma in midweek, was in electric form all afternoon but the headlines will go to the £15million Russian and substitute Emmanuel Eboue, who scored twice at the end.

Arshavin netted a fine individual effort after 65 minutes and may yet be credited with a second after his heavily deflected shot gave Arsenal the after just 80 seconds, while Eboue benefited from a tap-in and a penalty.

Arsenal took inside two minutes to open their account for the afternoon, Arshavin trying, perhaps unsuccessfully, to claim his first strike for the club.

Nicklas Bendtner started things off from a deep position, neatly turning Morten Gamst Pedersen before rolling a defence-splitting pass to Walcott on the right.

Walcott raced to the byline and cut the ball into the six-yard box where both Song and Arshavin were waiting at the near post.

It was the Russian who got the first touch but a heavy deflection off Andre Oijer means it was surely an own goal.

El-Hadji Diouf, booked for lunging at Manuel Almunia, looked Rovers' most likely creator, twice finding space behind the attacking Bacary Sagna but lacking support in the final third.

There was a change after 13 minutes, Gael Givet giving way to David Dunn and Warnock dropping from midfield to left-back to make room.

But the shift in personnel did not bring Blackburn's defence to life, with Bendtner handed far too much room to test Paul Robinson from 20 yards.

Warnock himself was lucky to avoid censure when he barged the sprightly Walcott to the turf a yard outside the penalty box after he was released by Arshavin.

With half an hour gone, the Gunners on the attack again, Arshavin and Walcott dovetailing wonderfully to free Sagna on the overlap.

His cross found Bendtner at the far post but, after a moment of hesitation in the Blackburn defence, the danger was cleared.

With 10 minutes to play before the break Samir Nasri almost made it two, rattling the woodwork with a vicious free-kick.

The Frenchman went close again seconds later, striking a bouncing ball first time from eight yards and forcing an unconvincing save from Robinson.

Pedersen had a half chance to equalise with the last move of the first period but with two defenders and Almunia bearing down on him, he lost his footing at the key moment.

After the interval, the hosts came out in inspired form and Walcott, once more, was the key.

First he outpaced Warnock only a minute after the restart, getting himself into space but then dragging his shot well wide, then he handed Bendtner the simplest of scoring chances.

Speed was again the key, allowing the winger to measure his cutback after losing his marker.

With the goal gaping, the Danish striker got his feet in a tangle and made only the lightest of contacts.

And with just five minutes of the half gone Walcott made his third major impact, athletically volleying a loose ball in the area and drawing Robinson into a smart reaction save.

It was not long before Kolo Toure got in on the act, attracting a huge cheer for lobbing the ball over Pedersen's head as he moved up from defence.

But for all their dominance the lead remained at a single goal.

Indeed, it was fast becoming one of those days for the oft-criticised Bendtner, who missed a hat-trick of presentable chances in the space of three minutes and started to feel the fans' frustrations.

It was Arshavin who released the pressure.

Collecting the ball wide on the left, the January signing drove straight for goal. He ghosted past Danny Simpson, who offered little by way of a challenge, and lifted his ball expertly into the roof of the net.

This time there was no doubt over the ownership of the goal.

Bendtner, though, had one more miss left before being replaced by Carlos Vela.

A thrilling run by Walcott and a superb pass from Arshavin teed him up this time but a graceful move was denied a fitting end when the striker blazed into the stands.

To their credit, the Arsenal fans gave the misfiring Dane a loud show of support as the left the field.

Substitute Eboue, who has enjoyed less generosity from the crowd this season, poked home the third after Robinson pushed out another Arshavin effort with three minutes left.

The Ivorian then stroked home from the penalty spot after Vela was clumsily fouled by Martin Olsson.

Champion's League: Gunners hold their nerve

AS Roma 1 - 0 Arsenal

Arsenal squeezed into the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a dramatic 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico after losing 1-0 on the night, drawing 1-1 on aggregate.
Brazilian defender Juan capitalised on some poor defending to fire the Italians in front and level the tie after just 10 minutes.

The Gunners grew in stature as the match went on, but could not find a way through as extra-time passed - with Roma's Max Tonetto missing a crucial sudden-death spot-kick.

Roma had started the better, and it was no surprise when they took the lead.

Arsenal failed to clear their lines, as Francesco Totti swept a low cross into the penalty area, which was completely missed by both William Gallas and Kolo Toure and went through the legs of Rodrigo Taddei.

The ball rolled all the way to Juan at the far post, and the Brazilian defender thumped his shot past Manuel Almunia.

The goal for the home side lifted the already electric atmosphere inside the Stadio Olimpico, which will host the Champions League final in May.

It also opened the match up as the Gunners - unbeaten in 17 games before this game - now had to score to progress in normal time.

After 20 minutes, Abou Diaby found himself in a good position at the far post following a corner - but could not direct the ball with enough power to test Roma keeper Doni.

At the other end, Almunia was called into action twice in quick succession.

First the Spaniard denied Marco Motta with a strong block at the near post before tipping the follow-up strike from Taddei behind at full stretch.

Arsenal were on the back foot now, as the home fans cranked up the volume in a sustained spell of pressure.

Ten minutes before the break Gael Clichy got away down the left, and floated over a cross into the area.

Diaby arrived to meet it on the penalty spot, but his header was straight at Doni.

In the final moments of the first half, Roma were screaming for a penalty when Motta charged into the right side of the Arsenal box and went down under the challenge of Clichy.

The referee, though, was unimpressed - much to the disgust of the home fans with television replays suggesting they had a strong case.

The Italians started the second half brightly and substitute Julio Baptista - who had a loan spell with Arsenal - came close to connecting with a right-wing cross as he arrived a pace in the six-yard box.

In a rare moment of action at the other end, Bacary Sagna almost squeezed a near-post header in from a corner, but Doni was well positioned.

Arsenal, though, slowly built some pressure.

Emmanuel Eboue's cross was just too far ahead of Nicklas Bendtner in the centre, with the Dane doing well to force a corner.

Roma were still a threat, though, as Totti drove the ball at Almunia with pace from 20 yards.

Diaby controlled the ball on the edge of the area following a corner, and was unfortunate to see his shot drift wide.

Wenger turned to Theo Walcott with 17 minutes left, as the England winger replaced Eboue.

In a huge let-off for the Barclays Premier League club, Baptista somehow managed to miss his kick with the goal there for the taking as the ball came across into the six-yard box.

Eduardo came on for Bendtner with five minutes left. Toure headed over from close range in the dying moments - but there was no way through as the tie went to extra-time.

There were some tired legs now, and Arsenal looked to exploit the space on the counter-attack.

After 103 minutes, Robin van Persie volleyed over after being teed up by Denilson in the six-yard box.

Walcott's angled drive, after 111 minutes, was straight at Doni.

The home crowd were screaming for a penalty when Baptista went down between Gallas and Toure, but again the referee was unmoved.

The match would, though, ultimately be decided from the spot in the lottery of a shoot-out.

Eduardo saw his opening effort saved by Doni, but Mirko Vucinic stabbed his straight at Almunia three kicks later.

Walcott, Baptista, Nasri and Denilson all scored, before Totti stepped up to send the shoot-out into sudden death at 4-4.

Toure coolly dispatched his effort, as did Sagna and then John Arne Riise for Roma.

With the tally at 6-6, Diaby slotted home before the pressure got to Tonetto as he blazed the ball over and the Gunners were into the quarter-finals.

Chelsea's Kalou keen on a move to Arsenal

Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou has said he would consider joining Arsenal at the end of the season after being told of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's apparent interest in him.

Speaking to Setanta after Chelsea's 1-0 first-leg, last-16 Champions League win over Juventus on Wednesday evening the 23-year-old revealed he was honoured to be linked with Arsenal before heaping praise on Wenger and his side's style of play.

''Wenger said he thought of signing me? That's an honour for me, an honour'', said Kalou. ''He is a very great coach and I know that every single player in the world dreams of playing for him. I have a lot of respect for him, he is one of the best coaches in the world so why not?

''I am still under contract with Chelsea but of course I have plenty of friends who play for Arsenal in Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue and Emmanuel Adebayor. They are achieving huge things at Arsenal and watching them play is just beautiful.''

Kalou's revelation could prove to be destablising for Chelsea who have attempted to distance themselves from reports of in-fighting and under interim boss Guus Hiddink have appeared a more unified squad.

With Joe Cole ruled out through injury Hiddink has started Kalou in both of his two games in charge of Chelsea, but a lack of first team football before the Dutch coach's arrival could tempt Kalou to consider his options in the summer.

''You are never guaranteed to be in the Chelsea starting XI. Every single player fights to earn his place, including me, and the coach is the one that has the final word.

''At the present time I'm happy at Chelsea and I hope that the things that I want to happen will happen. I will think of my future once the season is over,'' added Kalou.

Champion's League: Gunners spurn chances

Arsenal 1 - 0 AS Roma

Arsenal gave themselves a slender 1-0 advantage to take to Rome after a first-half penalty from Robin van Persie in their Champions League clash at Emirates Stadium.
However, the misfiring Gunners should have put the tie beyond the hosts - with Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Eboue both spurning golden chances as Arsenal's recent trend of poor finishing continued.

The Eternal City will host this year's Champions League final in May, and the massed ranks of visiting supporters had clearly travelled in genuine hope rather than just expectation after seeing their side qualify for the knockout stages ahead of Chelsea at the top of the group.

Arsenal had drawn blanks in each of their last three Barclays Premier League games, as manager Arsene Wenger was left to reflect on his team's inability to breakdown determined defences.

The encounter looked set to be a more open affair, with Roma all too aware of the importance an away goal would bring to the tie, and so it proved.

Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri was handed a roaming role, and broke the offside trap to dash into the right side of the penalty area.

He pulled the ball back for Bendtner, on the penalty spot, but it was just a yard behind him and the Dane's first touch was heavy, allowing the defenders to recover and block.

Then full-back Gael Clichy picked out Nasri with a deep cross from the left - but his glancing header flew wide.

There was a warning for Arsenal when Marco Motta let fly from 25 yards with an angled drive, which was heading towards the top right corner before Manuel Almunia tipped it behind.

Roma defender Simone Loria then somehow managed to stab the ball over when he was picked out in the six-yard box by a quick free-kick.

Despite all of their possession, Arsenal were again unable to convert it into a goal.

However, the Gunners were awarded a penalty on 37 minutes when Van Persie got into the left side of the area, and was tripped by Philippe Mexes.

The Dutchman stepped up to take the spot-kick himself - and coolly dispatched his 15th goal of the season into the bottom right corner.

Van Persie was in the thick of the action again when he dashed towards the goalline and pulled the ball back, but Bendtner was crowded out at the near post.

Daniele De Rossi was somewhat fortunate to only get a yellow card following a two-footed lunge on Nasri, who went sprawling into the far touchline. The defender will, nevertheless, now miss the second leg.

The second half opened in farcical fashion as Roma kicked off when Arsenal only had nine men on the field.

William Gallas and Kolo Toure eventually dashed from out of the tunnel, with the Ivory Coast defender running straight on to the pitch - and was promptly booked by Danish referee Claus Bo Larsen for entering the field of play without permission.

Bendtner should have made it 2-0 on 53 minutes.

Eboue dashed forward and into the right side of the box, before squaring for Van Persie.

The Dutchman was hustled off the ball, which broke to Bendtner on the left.

The young Dane took a touch to set himself in the six-yard box - before then blazing his shot high over the bar.

Arsenal continued to press forwards, with Diaby's shot on-the-turn from 18 yards forcing Alexander Doni into a smart save, down to the keeper's left.

A mix-up in the Roma defence when Loria slipped suddenly gifted Eboue a golden chance as he latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the area, However, the Ivory Coast midfielder went wide and skewed his shot the wrong side of the post, with the keeper beaten.

Wenger sent on Mexican winger Carlos Vela, replacing Bendtner, to inject some pace for the final 22 minutes.

Arsenal sat back, looking to protect their lead, but it looked a dangerous tactic.

Nasri's shot was deflected behind as Arsenal looked for a crucial second goal, but in the end had to be content with just the one to show for all their efforts.

Wenger backs Arsenal's "golden generation"

Arsene Wenger insists his struggling Arsenal side will become the best in England within the next few seasons.

The Frenchman believes he has his very own "golden generation" at the Emirates Stadium - such as that which came through the ranks at Manchester United in the mid-1990s and went on to dominate the English game for several years.

Wenger's young team have struggled to live up to the Gunners' high expectations this season, and face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night knowing they may need to win the competition in order to qualify for next season's version.

Star striker Robin van Persie has already hinted at his unhappiness with the way things have gone this term.

But the Arsenal boss has told his players and supporters to keep the faith in a squad he is adamant can become the best in the Barclays Premier League.

"I believe that no matter what happens it is important to keep this team together. This team is as good as anything in England," Wenger said.

"At the start of the season, we played with (Theo) Walcott, (Abou) Diaby, (Cesc) Fabregas, (Samir) Nasri and Denilson and the oldest one was 21.

"When they will all be 23 or 24 they will comfortably beat all the other teams, believe me."

He added: "We have to keep them together no matter what happens and that is where the danger is in the modern game.

"What we achieve in the rest of this season and the trophies we win is important in keeping players like Cesc and Van Persie."

Arshavin to make Gunners bow

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that club record signing Andrei Arshavin will make his debut against Sunderland at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Gunners are looking to maintain their bid for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season and hope the £15million Russian playmaker can help close the five point gap to fourth placed Chelsea.

The 27-year-old was named as a substitute for north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur shortly after his arrival from Zenit St Petersburg in early February but did not make an appearance.

Arshavin has not played a competitive match since the end of the Russian Premier League season in late November and Wenger is undecided on whether he will start Arshavin against Sunderland or bring him on from the bench.

"He will be involved," Wenger told Arsenal TV. "But I have not decided what I will do with him yet."

The Gunners boss still has few doubts over the midfielder's match fitness but expects Arshavin to be fully ready in a week's time.

"He is still working on preparation and he is not qualified for the (Champions League) game against Roma (on Tuesday) so we can give him another week of hard work," said Wenger.

"At the end of next week, that will be three weeks with us and one week with Zenit, that should be enough."

However, Wenger had a setback when striker Eduardo was ruled out for two weeks with a hamstring injury just days after returning from a broken leg.

The Croatia international only made his comeback after a year out of the first team in Monday's FA Cup fourth-round victory against Cardiff.

The 25-year-old marked his return with two goals in the 4-0 success at Emirates Stadium but his latest setback is not described as serious.

Wenger said: "Eduardo is out for two weeks. He picked up a hamstring injury two minutes before I took him off. What a nightmare.

"Nobody knows how it happened but I knew straight away after the game it would be a two-week job.

"It is nothing like he had before but I do know that little setbacks like this are part of being nine months out.

"After that long out, nobody plays six months on the trot. It is impossible.

"But at the same time it is a blow because, of course, he can score goals. He had shown that on Monday night."

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Eboue is back from suspension and Johan Djourou is fit following his sickness on Monday night.

Match-winner Eduardo earns Wenger praise

Arsene Wenger tonight described Eduardo as a ''mountain'' of mental strength after the striker capped his return to the Arsenal team with a match-winning performance against Cardiff.

Eduardo was a surprise name in the Gunners' starting line-up for their FA Cup fourth-round replay - after almost a year out injured - and rewarded his manager with his first goals since scoring against Manchester City in February last year.

Nicklas Bendtner and substitute Robin van Persie also got on the scoresheet as the Gunners brushed aside their Coca-Cola Championship opposition 4-0, making light of the 0-0 stalemate in the initial tie.

''Everybody is very happy for him. This is the kind of game we love to play, and it was good to see them play with the handbrake off,'' said Wenger.

''He played a big part in that, and I'm very pleased for him.

''He made a big step forward in training two weeks ago, and you could see he found his sharpness in front of goal.

''He's been extremely strong mentally. I've never seen one minute of doubt in his mind, not one minute where he said 'I don't want to do this'.

''He is always wanting more. This guy is small but he has the mental strength of a mountain.''

The Frenchman may have to manage the comeback of his Croatian striker carefully - he came off while still in search of his hat-trick with a slight hamstring complaint - but admitted he could yet boost his side's prospects in the end-of-season run-in.

''He had a slight tightness of the hamstring, but we expect it will be a small thing,'' added Wenger.

''We'll know at the end of the season how important it [his comeback] is, but I'm very happy to have him back. He can play as a striker, on the flank, behind the striker, up front on his own. That is important for us.''

Wenger also explained Eduardo's decision to celebrate his second goal, which he earned himself following a second-half surge into the Cardiff box, by running straight to the Arsenal support staff.

''Our fitness coach spent more time with him than with his wife,'' he joked.

''He deserved that hug, as did the physios and the doctors - they all did a tremendous job. They spent a lot of time with Eduardo.

''We get to use him when he is ready, but they all did a great job with him.''

Cardiff boss Dave Jones had less to smile about after a disappointing performance from his team.

''All I can take from tonight is that (goalkeeper) Tom Heaton played very well,'' he said.

''I'm glad the game is over, because we didn't do ourselves justice tonight whatsoever.

''Sometimes when you come to an Arsenal or one of the big clubs you just have to suffer for 90 minutes - and tonight I think we suffered for 90 minutes.

''We couldn't get any passes away or any control.

''People are telling me we haven't played for two weeks or whatever. But I could look for as many excuses as I want - we just didn't play to the level we are capable of.

''If I could have substituted 10 of them I would have - because we just didn't perform.

''People are saying the Championship is our priority, but it would have been nice to have come here and put in a performance.''

Arshavin signs for Arsenal

The Premier League have confirmed Andrei Arshavin is an Arsenal player after approving his move from Zenit St Petersburg.

Both the Gunners and the player himself had endured an anxious wait after a race to get a deal agreed, signed and sealed on deadline day.

The 27-year-old moves to the Gunners for an "undisclosed fee on a long-term contract" as is now the statutory transfer statement at the Emirates.

"I am so happy to be joining Arsenal. They are one of the leading football clubs in the world, with a group of fantastic young players and a great manager,'' he said.

"I am looking forward to making the Arsenal supporters happy and helping this great club win trophies. I'm happy to be an Arsenal player, it was my dream.''

The Russian revealed the prospect of playing under Wenger was one of many reasons why he had his heart set on the move.

Arshavin told Arsenal's website: "I moved because I like the Arsenal style, Wenger as a coach and I like some of their players. I followed each game from the moment when I met Arsene Wenger.

"He told me every time I talked to him, he said: ''I want you to come to Arsenal". He had confidence in me.''

When asked if he had a message to the Arsenal fans, he answered: "Trust in me and Arsenal.''

"It was a very hard few days for me but now it doesn't matter because I'm a Gunner, it's great,'' he added.

Having played for Zenit in this year's Champions League, Arshavin will not be able to play for the Gunners in the competition.

Wenger hopes the Russian will kickstart the club's campaign for qualification to the Champions League next term, however.

"We are delighted to have signed Andrei Arshavin, he is a player I have admired for a long time,'' the Frenchman said. "He is a versatile player with great experience, who will add real quality to our squad.

"Andrei is an exciting impact player with a huge amount of ability and has been an influential force with both Zenit St Petersburg and the Russian national team in recent seasons.''

Arshavin, who will wear the number 23 shirt, believes it will take him up to two weeks to return to full fitness but insisted he will have no problems adapting to the English game.

Earlier on Tuesday Zenit reported the fee to be a total of £16.95m including future incentives.

The playmaker shot to prominence at Euro 2008 after being a hugely important figure in Russia's qualifying campaign as well as being instrumental in Zenit winning the Russian title in 2007.

Arshavin played 232 games for Zenit, scoring 51 goals and was the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year.

It seems uncertain when the player will be able to make his debut for the Gunners as he has not played since managing only the first 45 minutes of Zenit's Champions League defeat at Real Madrid on December 10. And before that Arshavin's last game was 70 minutes against Juventus on November 25.

Zenit's official website earlier on Tuesday stated: "The St Petersburg club will receive £16.5m - £15m for the transfer of the player and £1.5m compensation for breaking a long-term contract.

"In addition there is a further 500,000 Euros [£450,000] in bonuses which Arshavin has not yet received which will not be paid and instead make up part of the transfer sum.

"The overall sum of the transfer is around US Dollars 24m [£16.9m].''

Should those figures be correct, the deal would represent a transfer record for the unners.

Arshavin, who is reported to have been prepared to take a pay cut to join Arsenal, will now return to Russia to complete some personal arrangements before starting work at his new club.

EPL: Arsenal's title bid suffers fatal blow

Arsenal 0 - 0 West Ham United

Arsenal's Premier League frustrations continued as a determined West Ham held out for a goalless draw at Emirates Stadium.

Abou Diaby saw an early header deflected onto the crossbar, and Emmanuel Adebayor missed two good chances in the second half, while even the introduction of leading scorer Robin van Persie from the bench could not conjure up a winner.

The Hammers, who continued their unbeaten run, defended well as a unit throughout and were worth a share of the points.

The Gunners, meanwhile, may have not lost in the Premier League since beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on November 30, but remain well adrift in the title race and, crucially, outside the top four.

It was a bright start by the home side, who almost snatched an early lead when Diaby's header from a corner deflected off defender James Collins and onto the crossbar.

West Ham - who became the first team to win at Emirates Stadium in April 2007 during their successful battle against relegation - continued to sit back and invite pressure.

Samir Nasri was causing all sorts of problem with his pace down the left, and Nicklas Bendtner was only inches away from connecting with his cross into the six-yard box.

The young Dane should have perhaps done better than to head wide when, in the 21st minute, he did get on the end of a deep centre from the busy French winger.

There was a hold-up when Emmanuel Eboue needed treatment after being flattened in a challenge with Scott Parker. The much-maligned Ivory Coast midfielder limped heavily on his return to action, and was eventually replaced by Mexican youngster Carlos Vela with 10 minutes to go before half-time.

Nasri moved into the middle as Arsenal looked to be more creative.

However, while it continued to be one-way traffic, West Ham held their defensive line well.

To their credit, Zola's men looked to counter attack as possible.

Collins sent a header goalwards from a corner, which was knocked away by Gael Clichy on the far post.

Arsenal again enjoyed a good spell following the restart after Hammers skipper Lucas Neill pushed over Vela on the left.

The free-kick was sent deep towards the back post, where Bendtner knocked it down and Green punched out.

Kolo Toure acrobatically hooked the ball goalwards over his shoulder, but Collins was on hand to head clear.

Arsenal were on the offensive again when some quick footwork created space for Diaby on the edge of the penalty area, only for the midfielder to then drag his low shot wide.

Denilson had two efforts blocked as Arsenal again threatened the West Ham goal.

A quick counter attack released Bacary Sagna on the overlap down the right.

His cross towards the near post was met by Adebayor, who slid in ahead of his marker, but could only guide the ball wide.

Denilson pulled the trigger again from just outside the box, and his angled shot flew over the top corner.

With 22 minutes left, Wenger turned to Van Persie - who has had a hand in every Arsenal goal this month - as the Dutchman replaced Bendtner.

It was then West Ham's turn to make an attacking change when record signing Savio Nsereko went on for Mark Noble.

Adebayor had another golden chance when picked out in the middle by Vela's cross from the left, but could only head the ball straight at Green.

Vela was booked for going down as he charged between defenders into the left side of the penalty box, which looked somewhat harsh.

With seven minutes left, West Ham introduced former Gunner Luis Boa Morte for David Di Michele.

Diaby was carried off following an awkward fall in a challenge with Savio and was replaced by Song.

The Gunners pressed for a winner, but the visitors remained resolute to the final whistle during four minutes of stoppage time.
